Pay It Forward, Pay It Back

The Positive Rant

By Marquis Hunt

The year is coming to a close, and I hope that everyone enjoyed the 2008-2009 experience. There have been many great people on campus that have done great things, and whether big or small, have made it better for the five-college campuses.

Notice the teacher who raised your spirits when he or she exclaims their knowledge upon the class. Notice the student leaders who work on making events for students such as movie nights, free food festivals, seminars, and discussions. Notice even the nice people who keep the door open for you when you walk into Herter, or the guys down the hall that sacrifice their time to do beer runs.

Note that there are a collection of assholes, dickheads and scallywags that have ruined some moments during these last two semesters, but also think about all the people that have helped you along the way.

Your teacher made a difference in your life. A random person gave you attention and helped you out. The next-door neighbors helped you move in the first day of school. Your friend drove you home from a party last weekend.

These people need to be recognized, and for their good hearts and sacrifice, it would be good to pass that good faith onward. Even better, make sure you also give back some of the goodwill back onto those that made the effort to be good people. There are only a couple of weeks left before most of the student body part ways; If you know someone, even if it is someone you hardly know, find a way to pay it forward and reward them for their kind ethics.

As sappy or gratuitous as most gestures may come across ( such as baking someone a cake, or buying them a King Cobra ), paying it forward brings the community together, and paying back gives respect to those who do positive things for our student brotherhood.

A smile, a thank you, help with homework, a gift, a 40 ounce, a hug. Pay it forward. Pay it back as well. Lets give a little love back before the semester closes.
