Space heaters are small heaters that warm up apartments or a couple of rooms. Other space heaters warm up a cold basement, or outdoor shed.

They are very efficient, the newer designs don’t waste as much electricity, and they save money since you won’t have to turn your thermostat on much. Very beneficial if you don’t want to turn on the heat in your whole home if you or your family is just using one room. You just got a heating bill for $200? Then you need to get yourself a space heater to save this winter.

There are two types of space heaters that are the most mainstream: Radiant and Convection. There are oil-filled and water-filled as well: those are also good, but we couldn’t find other heaters in other categories worth the value in comparison to radiant and convection types.

Radiant Heaters

Radiant space heaters are heaters that give a good blast of heat, and can warm up a small area quick. Not very great at heating large areas, but fantastic for a small office, bedroom, kitchen, or just next to you while you sit.

Quartz heaters use metal coils that are heated and become bright. They are cheap and the mainstream choice for radiant space heaters. Ceramic heaters have a plastic casing, and are considered safer and more efficient than Quartz. They are a little expensive, and tend to only produce the same or a little less heat than a Quartz.

They usually come with settings of 400, 800, and 1500-watt settings. Others only have 800-watts maximum. Be sure to check the wattage. The lower the wattage, the longer it takes for a room or spot to heat up.

Convection Heaters

Convection Heaters heat up the air of the entire room or floor rather than blow out into a specific area. Some take longer than radiant heaters to warm a space, some are faster. They go from 500-watt to 5000

They usually cost a little more than radiant heaters, but they are now coming in tower form ( like above ) which improves efficiency and space. Convection Heaters with fans are the most popular, since the fans can blow the heated air around the room.

Both types of heaters come with a lot of features. Some come with easy settings and even remote controls. Most come with an auto-off sequence if it gets too hot or tips over. Others come with humidifiers and cooling fans that can also be used as a Summer A/C. Be sure to follow the guidelines for safety; just like a hot light, do not leave next to curtains, clothes, or power cords.

Recommended Heaters to Buy ( Recommended through customer reviews and consumer reports:

  • Honeywell (Convection): Considered one of the best, safest, and easiest space heater around. 3-year warranty. Safety measures such as turning off if something gets to close to it for a long period of time. $50-70
  • Holmes Quartz Tower Heater (Radiant): The HQH319-U is considered less noisier than the HQH307. These new ones aren’t that noisy; if you don’t have children or don’t need intense quiet, the noise is never much of a problem. Six-year warranty. $50-80
  • Delonghi Safe Heat Space Fan ( Convection ): The space fan is real small and efficient. It turns off if it overheats, and can be used as a one-way fan. $15-30
